Qualification & work experience

Dr. Chan Jin Kim received his bachelor of law degree from the Seoul National University in 1963. He passed the bar examination in 1962 and enrolled at the Graduate School of Law, Seoul National University and was licensed to practice law in 1964. He spent one year at the University of Michigan Law School in 1968. He then went on to pursue his Ph.D. in Law at the University of Washington Law School 1969-1972. Dr. Kim was fully licensed as a Patent Attorney in 1973, he then spent fourteen years as economic administrator at the Korean government: Director-General of Economic Planning Board (1973-1978), Secretary to the President for Industrial Affairs (1978-1980) and Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister for Economic Affairs (1980-1986). In these capacities, Dr. Kim overlooked, in part, the operation of the Ministry of Industry and Resources in general and the Patent Office in particular. Dr. Kim has enjoyed giving occasional lectures at the UW Law School and Harvard Law School. He is scheduled to give a lecture on Korean Economic Development and Law in the spring quarter of 2007 at UW Law School. Dr. Kim has long years of work experiences in both the private and public spheres. In 1986, he founded the CJ International Law Offices. He also served as a national lawmaker at the Korean National Assembly from 1997 to 2000. He also served as a commissioner at the Korean Trade Commission from 1993 through 1996. Between 1988 and 1994, he was the representative in Korea of the Berlin Economic Development Corporation.

Domestic and International Activities

Dr. Kim holds his memberships at both the Korean Patent Attorney Association and the International Bar Association. Dr. Kim is also a life member of the LAWASIA and an associate member of the American Bar Association. He is the founder and Honorary President of the Korean Research Institute of Comparative Law as well as the founder and Honorary Chairman of the Korean Competition Law Society.
